The Asian Games sailing competition got underway on Saturday (Sep 26) at Kaiyoh Yacht Harbour in Gamagori City.
To follow Singapore’s 11-strong sailing contingent and their progress in Nagoya, here’s what you need to know:
ILCA 6 women’s and ILCA 7 men’s events
Jania Ang will be competing in the ILCA 6 women’s dinghy event, while Ryan Lo, who achieved a historic seventh at the 2026 ILCA 7 Men's World Championship, will defend his men's dinghy title.
For these events, the eventual winner will also earn one continental quota place for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The competition will consist of an opening series of up to nine races, after which the fleet will be whittled down to the top 10 sailors for a two-race final.
Sailors will be ranked according to their scores from the qualification series, with the competitor with the lowest score at the top of the standings.
To simplify the scoring for viewers, the leader’s score will be reset to zero, while the other boats will retain the points gap they had from the leader after the opening series.
Those scores will then be carried into the two-race final, with the sailor who finishes with the lowest overall score winning gold.
To ensure the final retains its excitement, gaps between consecutive boats after the opening series will be capped at nine points.
For competitors ranked fourth to 10th, the gap to the third-placed sailor will also be capped at 18 points, meaning even the sailor in 10th will retain a mathematical chance of finishing on the podium.
Other events (Girls’ dinghy, boys’ dinghy, youth mixed dinghy, windsurfing, skiff)
For the other events, the competition will use a standard fleet-racing format, where consistency across races will be crucial.
There will be no finals or medal-race shootouts in these events. Instead, the sailor with the lowest cumulative net score at the end of the competition will be crowned champion.
Ian Goh and Sean Kum will compete in the boys’ skiff (29er) while Ethan Chia and Ashlea Tham will compete in the youth mixed dinghy (420), which will feature up to 12 races.
Debutants Mika Tew and Ian Goh will compete in the girls’ and boys’ dinghy (ILCA 4) events respectively, which will also feature up to 12 races.
Windsurfers Angyal Chew and Jong Wong will compete in the iQFoil Youth class, while Marsha Shahrin will feature in the iQFoil. These will comprise 20 races over five days of competition
