Team Singapore continued to impress on the sixth day of competition at the Asian Youth Games, delivering strong performances across table tennis, badminton, and swimming. The day was highlighted by two podium finishes in the pool as our young athletes across the various sports showcased their talent, determination, and pride at the games.
The swimming contingent added sparkle to Team Singapore’s campaign with two medals and several personal bests. In the Boys’ 50m Freestyle, Tedd Windsor Chan III Heng Kai finished 3rd in heat 7 with 23.84 seconds, ranking 8th overall to qualify for the final. In the final, Tedd powered through the field to finish second with a new personal best of 23.39 seconds, taking home the Silver medal for Singapore. Meanwhile, his teammate Hee Kejun clocked 24.24 seconds to finish 4th out of 8 in his heat for the same event, ranking 14th out of 54 swimmers overall. The Girls’ 100m Butterfly saw another stellar swim from Yo Ee Xin Megan Janice, who won her heat in 1:01.19 to rank second overall, before clocking 1:00.71 in the final to claim the Bronze medal. Her teammate Keira Chew also impressed with a time of 1:03.83 in her heat, placing 10th overall in the Girls' 100m Butterfly.
There were further strong swims across the team. In the Boys’ 200m Backstroke, Julian Lee Xing Hong recorded a new personal best in the heats, topping Heat 2 in 2:06.14 to rank fifth overall. Meanwhile, his teammate Reagan Cheng Kuo Shiong won Heat 4 in 2:06.35 to rank sixth. In the final, Reagan placed seventh in 2:05.61, while Julian finished eighth with 2:06.63. In the Girls’ 200m Backstroke, Julia Yeo Shu Ning posted 2:21.43 in the heats to qualify sixth overall, and then lowered her time to 2:19.19 in the final, another personal best, to finish just shy of the podium in fourth place. On the other hand, teammate Ng Shi Ying Charlotte swam 2:24.71 in her heat to finish 14th overall in the same event.
In the Girls’ 400m Freestyle, Sim En Xi Sarah clocked 4:30.91 in the heats to advance to the final, where she placed sixth with a time of 4:31.21. Ashley Wong also competed strongly, finishing 13th overall with a time of 4:37.95 in the heats. The Boys’ 4x100m Freestyle Relay team of Lim Zhequan Lawrence, Tan Yonghao, Tedd Windsor Chan III Heng Kai, and Zavier Tay Qian Zheng recorded 3:34.70 in the heats, placing 4th out of 6 in their heat and 10th overall out of 21. The Girls’ 4x100m Freestyle Relay team of Ashley Wong, Chew En Vivienne, Keira Chew, and Yo Ee Xin Megan Janice also had a splendid swim after posting 4:05.75 in the heats, finishing 7th out of 8 and 10th overall out of 15.
In the Girls’ 50m Freestyle heats, Ng Shi Ying Charlotte swam 28.82 seconds to place 5th in Heat 1 and 30th overall out of 47, while Julia Yeo Shu Ning clocked 28.61 seconds to finish 4th in the same heat and 25th overall. Both swimmers put in commendable efforts and have gained valuable experience at this meet.
In table tennis, Singapore’s mixed doubles pairs turned in outstanding results. The duo of Loy Ming Ying and Lau Yi Yuan Benjamin opened their campaign with a confident 3–1 victory over Bangladesh’s Khatun Asma and Hasib Hashem in the Round of 32, before battling to a thrilling 3–2 win over Hong Kong’s Lo Ka Kit and Su Tsz Tung in the Round of 16. Their teammates Chiang Rui En, Janelle and Seah Shih Luck Benaiah were equally impressive, sweeping Lebanon’s Al Dakdouki Ramez and El Habech Yasmina 3–0, and then defeating Thailand’s Preechayan Thitaphat and Vijitviriyagul Kulapassr 3–2 to secure their place in the quarterfinals. Both pairs will return to action on 28 October at 3:00 pm (SGT) for their quarterfinal clashes.
In the singles events, Singapore’s paddlers showed great composure and consistency. Tristen Yee Rui Bing defeated Yemen’s Al-Maflehi Aiman 3–0 in the Boys’ Singles Group P Match 3 to progress to the Round of 32, while Lau Yi Yuan Benjamin also advanced with a 3–0 win over Bangladesh’s Rahman Mhatabur in Group S Match 5. On the girls’ side, Chong Zi Sian beat Bahrain’s Alkhayyat Dana 3–0 in Group J Match 3, and Chiang Rui En, Janelle also took a commanding 3–0 victory over Mongolia’s Tuvshinbayar Enkhjin in Group O Match 6. Both of them will advance to the Round of 32 as well.
In badminton, Chew Jie Rui had an excellent display in the Boys’ Singles Round of 64 with a convincing 2–0 win over Qatar’s Almaki Hamad to advance to the Round of 32, which will take place on 28 October at 10:00 pm (SGT). Teammate Tee Kai Ze put up a determined fight in his Round of 32 match against India’s Talasila Tankara, but eventually went down 0–2. Despite the loss, Kai Ze displayed great grit and sportsmanship, gaining valuable experience at this level.
With two medals, one Silver from Tedd Windsor Chan III Heng Kai in the Boys’ 50m Freestyle and one Bronze from Yo Ee Xin Megan Janice in the Girls’ 100m Butterfly, and multiple personal bests and strong efforts by the athletes, Day 6 was a proud and inspiring one for Team Singapore. From the table tennis tables to the badminton courts and the swimming pool, our young athletes continue to demonstrate their skill, heart, and resilience as they represent the nation at the Asian Youth Games.
