How Team Sports at Pesta Sukan United a Nation and Ignited Sporting Legends
On the team sports front, Pesta Sukan has served as both social glue and talent incubator. Basketball first dribbled into Singapore in 1925, introduced via British schools and community clubs. Though the sport grew steadily post-World War II, it shot into the spotlight during the 1971 Pesta Sukan, when nearly 9,000 fans jammed into Gay World Stadium, leading to a temporary gate closure due to overcrowding. In 1964, Singapore began the annual Sports Festival, and Singapore Amateur Basketball Association (SABA) greatly supported the festival by inviting basketball teams from Asia, Middle East, and Australia to participate in the Singapore Festival International Invitation Competition; it eventually became an important event in the international basketball calendar.
Held annually, the basketball tournament at Pesta Sukan features teams from local communities, schools, and corporates fostering both competition and camaraderie. The event is known for its high energy, enthusiastic crowds, and the display of emerging talent. For many players, especially youth and amateur athletes, the tournament is a stepping stone to greater exposure in Singapore’s basketball scene.
What sets basketball at Pesta Sukan apart is not just the level of competition, but the cultural and community spirit it embodies. The tournament often runs alongside other festivities, drawing families and fans from all walks of life. It’s a celebration not only of athletic excellence but also of the shared values of perseverance, teamwork, and respect.
In recent years, the event has embraced inclusivity by hosting men’s, women’s, and youth divisions, further encouraging participation and development of the sport. Whether you're a seasoned fan or a casual observer, basketball at Pesta Sukan offers an exciting and meaningful glimpse into Singapore’s sporting heartbeat.

From the golden era of the 1971 to 1993, with Singapore making 12 consecutive Asian Championship appearances. Today, basketball remains hugely popular, making it the festival's one of the top-participation sports.
FIBA & NBA: New Horizons
- In 2022, Singapore hosted the 3x3 Asia Cup at the picturesque Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza
- In April 2025, Singapore began formally partnering with the NBA, hosting its first clinics, watch parties, and community events, bringing global basketball giants closer to our local fans.
- Singapore to host FIBA 3x3 World Cup in 2027.
The nation has also hosted FIBA 3x3 World Tour events, aligning with the sport’s expansion into urban and Olympic formats. The 3x3 Basketball, an innovative format inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide, is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. This modern and fast-paced format made its international debut at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and attracted widespread attention. The impact was keenly felt and in just over a decade, 3x3 Basketball made the list of contested sports at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
Beyond major international tournaments, Singapore has built a strong basketball ecosystem that engages players of all ages. The ActiveSG Basketball Academy continues to nurture young talent, attracting over 2,000 youth participants each season, while the community-league ActiveSG Cup attracted approximately 5,500 players across 10 age groups in 2024. Pesta Sukan, Singapore’s annual community multi-sport festival, saw more than 600 teams competing last year, demonstrating the sport’s growing popularity.
These efforts are a testament to SportSG’s efforts to raise the profile of basketball and grow our talent pool. Together with major events such as the upcoming NBA Rising Stars Invitational in June and FIBA Intercontinental Cup in September, Singapore’s reputation as a basketball powerhouse will be further cemented. Through these efforts, SportSG continues to ensure that basketball in Singapore remains accessible, vibrant, and competitive at all levels.
ActiveSG Sport Park @ Bedok North (located at the former Bedok Swimming Complex site), this redeveloped sporting facility serves the community with multiple basketball courts, comprising 4 outdoor courts, 1 sheltered court, and 1 dedicated sheltered 3x3 basketball court. The facility also features 4 pickleball courts to accommodate the sport's growing popularity.
As Pesta Sukan continues to evolve, basketball remains a key force in uniting communities, inspiring young athletes, and showcasing the enduring spirit of Singapore through sport.
