At the Rajamangala National Stadium, Team Singapore’s Men’s Under-22 (U22) football team fell 1–3 to Timor Leste in their opening match of the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand.
Featuring many new faces, this U22 squad entered the tournament eager to make their mark. At the whistle, Singapore came out strong, pressing aggressively, winning interceptions, and creating early scoring chances. Their efforts paid off just 10 minutes in, when Captain Amir Syafiq Bin Abdul Rashid found the back of the net to give Singapore a 1–0 lead.
Timor Leste, however, responded swiftly. Goals from Fabio Canavaro and Anizo Correia turned the match in their favour before halftime.
Despite trailing, Team Singapore showed resilience and continued to push forward. They launched several promising attacking runs, including two attempts that agonisingly struck the post.
However, Timor Leste remained composed under pressure and added a third goal to seal the 3–1 victory against Singapore.
Team Singapore's first match offered valuable experience for the many debutant players. The team will look to build on these lessons as they prepare to face hosts Thailand on Thursday, 11 December, at 8pm (SGT).
The 33rd SEA Games are held in Thailand from 9 to 20 December 2025. For the latest Team Singapore coverage and news, follow Team Singapore on their social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) or visit the official Team Singapore website.
