Despite trailing world champions in the SEA Games quarter-final on Wednesday (Dec 17), debutantes Charmaine Chang and Arianne Tay remained unfazed.
Reminding themselves to keep fighting, their determination paid off as Chang and Tay beat Malaysians Natasha Mohamed Roslan and Sin Li Jane to reach the last four and eventually claim gold.
In the final, they outscored Indonesia’s Alisha Nabila Larasati and Putty Insavilla Armein 379-353 at the Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl.
Chang, who won the singles gold two days ago, said: “During qualifying, we did decently. I wouldn’t say as well as the rest but we tried to pick up as much as we could and tried to find solutions to tackle the lanes.
“Our quarter-final match was the toughest one and we knew we had to make every shot count. We did pretty well during that match and with that momentum, we carried on to the semis and the final.”
Tay credited the win to their shared mindset of not wanting to end the event with regrets.
She said: “We really just found all the way to the end and we wanted to put all our effort in and leave no regrets on the lane. We did that today and that got us the gold.
“It may be a bit demoralising to see the score when we’re losing, right? But ultimately, we know that the game isn’t finished until it’s finished.”
They will next compete in the team event alongside Colleen Pee and Nur Irdina Hazly over the next two days where they will be hoping to sweep the women’s events for Singapore.
Tay said: “Anything can happen. We have received and gathered a lot of information from the singles and doubles events. The team event will comprise both patterns and from there, the four of us will have to work together.
“From what we’ve gathered, we’ll figure it out and get the shots executed well.”
