There are various types of equipment one needs to prepare before starting a game of floorball, but the most important of all is the floorball stick. Learn how to choose the right one for you.

Floorball stick
There are many floorball sticks available in the market, so it can be hard to choose the right stick. It is always best to try them before buying, to make sure you get the one that is best suited for you.

Prices vary depending on what brand and sort of stick you choose. A slightly softer standard stick usually costs less than a harder stick, which is designed for competitive play. The best players often use stiffer sticks to enable them to make quicker passes and to take better shots. Young players and beginners are advised to use a softer stick to enhance stick skills.

The stick blade
The blade of the stick can be angled into the shape that you want. A small angle will give you a better backhand and make it easier to pass accurately. A more curved blade will give you better control on your forehand, but makes it slightly harder to pass accurately. However, do note that a blade should not be curved more than three centimetres if it is to be used in competition.

The stick shaft
A short stick can give you better control and technique because it brings you closer to the ball. That means you are more likely to make a good pass. Therefore, it is important to make sure that your shaft is the right length. The right length is measured from the floor up to your navel, with the blade included. A shaft longer than this is typically disadvantageous.

The grip
Most sticks are sold with a high quality grip, but if it does not feel right, the grip should be replaced with another.  The grip should cover the area you use to hold the stick when playing, but not below the grip mark, which is placed 24 centimetres from the lower end of the shaft.

Goalkeepers’ equipment
During competitions, the goalkeeper has to wear an approved helmet. The goalkeeper is also protected by specially-made goalkeepers’ shirts and trousers with thick padding. As a complement, gloves, kneepads and a jockstrap can be added. It is important to make sure that movements are unrestricted and the goalkeeper’s balance is maintained. The goal should not be covered by any of these equipment.
