Singapore shooter Gan Xin Chen capped off a fulfilling SEA Games debut with a team bronze and a creditable fourth-placed finish in the women’s 10m air rifle event on Dec 13.

The 22-year-old earned her place in the final after ranking fifth in the qualification round at the Shooting Sports Association of Thailand. Teammates Ho Xiu Yi and Martina Lindsay Amos were 10th and 11th respectively, and the trio’s combined scores were sufficient to secure a bronze in the team event. Indonesia took the gold ahead of Vietnam.

Gan, who scored 206.1 points over 20 shots in the final, relished the constant refrain of cheers from spectators in the shooting hall.

“I really enjoy finals and the heckling and the noise; I actually encourage my teammates to continue heckling in competitions,” she said with a grin.

“The training leading up to this has really paid off in that aspect. The only issue I had this time was not being able to get into the zone quick enough. It took me quite some time to be able to perform as per normal, and that was too late, so I’ll continue working on this.”

The eight-strong field included the likes of defending champion and eventual gold medallist Dewi Laila Mubarokah of Indonesia and Vietnam’s Le Thi Mong Tuyen, who won the mixed team 10m air rifle event a day earlier. But taking on “seasoned veterans” did not faze Gan, who is pursuing a double degree in history and political science at the National University of Singapore.

“I have competed against the finalists in other competitions before and I know that in terms of skills, I am definitely not lacking even though it’s my first time,” she said. “It could have gone a lot better, but the road to the SEA Games has been quite fulfilling. I’m juggling a double degree in university, and being able to come here is such a privilege. It could have been better, but I’m happy with the fact that I tried my best.”

The women’s 10m air rifle team bronze is Amos’ second medal at the 33rd SEA Games – she placed third in the mixed 10m air rifle team event with Zaccheus Chong on Dec 12. Of the women’s event, she said: “We expected better so it is a little disappointing. Performances like this will only make us want to train harder back home and prepare for the next Games.”

The 26-year-old will next compete in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions event, and she is looking forward to shooting outdoors.

“The 10m event is indoors and it’s in a controlled environment, but for the 50m, there will be the aspect of light, wind and humidity that we have to manage,” said Amos, who is making her fourth SEA Games appearance.

“Not to downplay the 10m event, but I like (the 50m) more. There’s more wind and more real shooting factors that make the event look a bit cooler. It’s a different rifle as well, so it’s more exciting for me with the wind and stuff. I do like that challenge.”
