For gymnast Mikayla Yang, her maiden SEA Games outing was a “good competition”, despite the disappointment of missing out on gold in Thailand.

The 18-year-old scored 101.49 in the women’s rhythmic individual all-around final on Dec 16 to take the silver, behind Jasmine Althea Ramilo of the Philippines (102.18) and joint-bronze medallists Peeramatukorn Piyada (Thailand) and Ng Joe Ee Malaysia), who both scored 96.89.

A mistake during her ribbon routine – the last one of the session – proved costly as Yang said: “We fought for every single routine and we tried our best. Ultimately, the last one wasn’t enough, but it gives us more to work towards. It’s a good end to a competition – first medal in a few years, so I’m really happy that I’m able to represent this country and get so much support for everyone.”

Her feat at Thammasat University is Singapore’s first individual rhythmic gymnastics medal since 2017.

Thanking her parents, coaches and supporters, Yang added: “I’m happy and grateful that I’m still able to get a medal. I will work harder for the next one and hopefully bring home the gold the next time.”

The Singaporean will return to training with an eye on next year’s Asian Games and the 2027 SEA Games. Her first appearance at a major multi-sport event was at the 2023 Asian Games, and she believes the experience helped in her SEA Games debut. And there are more lessons from Thailand that Yang will take with her as she looks towards future competitions.

“All the routines have their difficulties and you just have to focus through each of them. I was just going through each thing one step at a time and trying to keep my focus, especially at the end,” she said, emphasising the importance of not thinking too far ahead in between routines.

“(The take away) is to just stay in the moment and not doubt myself, and to remember that I can do everything in my routine.”

The 33rd SEA Games are held in Thailand from 9 to 20 December 2025. For the latest Team Singapore coverage and news, follow Team Singapore on their social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) or visit the official Team Singapore website.
