Singapore regained the men’s 4x400m relay bronze on the final day of the athletics competition on Tuesday (Dec 16).
They had finished third at the 2021 SEA Games in Hanoi but were unable to retain their medal in Cambodia two years ago.
At the Suphachalasai National Stadium, the team of Reuben Lee, Thiruben Thana Rajan, Zubin Muncherji and Calvin Quek clocked 3min 10.74sec to secure the bronze.
It was Quek’s second medal in Bangkok after an emotional 400m hurdles victory yesterday.
Despite running in fourth ahead of the last leg, Quek’s final burst saw him charge past Labita Alhryan of the Philippines right before the finish line.

He said: “I was really just trying to run and get a medal for the team. I know they really wanted to have a medal, especially for Zubin. I don’t know if it’s his last, it could be.”
Zubin quipped: “I’ve been saying that for the last five years so who knows?
“Aside from setting the national record all those years ago, the one thing that has eluded me is a medal when it matters.
“It’s a good way to conclude probably the end of my career. I’m just so happy to be here and end off the way we did and everyone did such an amazing job this whole time.”

Thiruben added: “I’m super proud of the guys. It’s not the first relay we did together but this is the one I’m the most proud of.
“You can see we really left it all on the line. Calvin with an amazing final leg, Reuben started us off well and Zubin, I’ve been training with him for so many years. I’m so proud to win a medal with him in what is probably his last race.”

Reflecting on his campaign, Lee now feels more inspired to keep working hard and improving.
He said: “Being able to compete with the region’s best gives me more motivation to run, especially in the 4x400m. Seeing my fellow Singaporeans giving it their all really makes me want to come back to the next SEA Games, get an individual medal for myself.”

Singapore Athletics president Lien Choong Luen is pleased with the contingent’s showing in Bangkok and hopes to continue building on this momentum.
He also highlighted a good proportion of young athletes among the team and more athletes setting personal and national records.
Eventually, he hopes the ecosystem and talent pool will continue to grow, especially with the 2029 SEA Games on home ground looming.
He said: “I’m very proud, but I, on their behalf, am greedy for more. The good thing about success and momentum is that it breeds even more and everyone feels they can do more.
“There are very few things that generate a sense of pride and (one of them is) standing in the stadium hearing the national anthem being played. To see the young children here say that could be me, that’s what I want to share with all the parents that, just support your kids to compete to the best level that they possibly can.
“It is a rare and unique privilege to represent your country – if you win a medal, even better. I really hope that every kid watching, every young girl says ‘I want to be like Shanti’, or ‘I want to be like Calvin’.”
Team Singapore ended their athletics campaign with three gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
