Ezell Low is making his debut at the 33rd SEA Games where sport climbing is featuring for just the second time. But the 19-year-old does not see these as limiting factors in his quest to achieve greater heights in his sport.

Despite being “really sad” about his fourth-placed finish in the speed event at the Bangkok Sport Climbing Centre on Dec 13, Low was proud of the way he coped with competing against opponents of different styles.

“I learnt how to climb calmly and consistently, because during my qualifications and practice I didn’t slip at all and managed to hit consistent times throughout,” said Low, who set a national record during the qualification rounds.

“I really wanted to win the gold for Singapore, but I’m really glad that I got this experience. I’ve always been determined, and this is not my long-term goal. My goal is to qualify for the Olympics in 2028, so this will be one of the stepping stones in getting there.”

His teammates Denzel Chua and Andre Ho finished seventh and eighth respectively in the men’s event, while Jeanette Koh placed seventh.

Ho was disappointed after making an error in the quarter-finals that disrupted his momentum, but was pleased to have recovered from a shoulder dislocation in time to make his SEA Games bow.

“I would have wanted to say something profound, but I feel like it’s all just part of the experience on the journey of competing,” added the 19-year-old.

“I had a month of recovery and I think I did a pretty good job with rehab and conditioning myself for this competition. I’ll take what I can from it. I managed to get myself back to the point where the injury wasn’t a limiting factor for me, so I’m quite happy with that.”

Sport climbing was last featured at the biennial Games in 2011, and Low hopes its inclusion in Thailand could be a signal that the sport will return for future editions.

“I really hope we host sport climbing during the 2029 SEA Games in Singapore – we have a lot of talent in Singapore, we just lack the facilities,” he said. “We only have one speed wall and it can be tough to compete against other people when they have better facilities, but we are still fortunate and I’m really glad for what we have.”

The 33rd SEA Games are held in Thailand from 9 to 20 December 2025. For the latest Team Singapore coverage and news, follow Team Singapore on their social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) or visit the official Team Singapore website.
