First conceptualised as a national movement for sport in 2014, ActiveSG is coming to its 10th year of enabling Singaporeans to live better through sport! In celebration of this precious milestone, we want to bring the limelight to interesting and inspiring individuals who have played a pivotal part in our ActiveSG journey.

Many people desire to find passion, inspiration and camaraderie in their workplace. For the lucky few, they find romance – like our active couple Muhd Fadli (husband) and Junidah (wife) who first met each other on 18 January 2019 during their STEP Southeast Asia Youth Sports Leaders Camp (SEAYSLC) OBS Training. Fadli has been serving as a coach at Bukit Canberra Sport Centre for 8 years, while Junidah has been a Sport Champion (Guest Officer) at ActiveSG Bukit Batok/Bukit Gombak Sport Centre for 12 years. Let’s hear more about the love story of our active couple.

What were your initial impressions of each other when you first met at work?

Fadli: Juni is a shy person. She doesn’t talk much until I get to know her more!
Junidah: Opposite of me. He’s crazy, cannot sit still like a monkey! And I used to think that he is a Filipino since he blends in so well with his Filipino colleagues.

Could you share how your relationship progressed from colleagues to a couple, was there a turning point in particular?

Fadli: I would say it’s the 2019 Southeast Asia Step Camp where we competed as facilitators.
Junidah: We unknowingly attended the same course together. After the course, we had a small chat before we headed home, and it turned out to be the longest “small” chat we ever had, till the lamp post light turned on haha!

How has working for the same organization affected your relationship, and how do you navigate that?

Fadli: Like every other relationship, there are bound to be a mix of good and challenging days but we embrace every moment. The main challenge for us is limited couple time since we work at different sport centres and at different shift timings. On the other hand, we really cherish our time together. Seeing each other at home after a long day at work is priceless.

Junidah: Yea, especially when we are working different shifts and handling major events. As they say, “Distance makes the heart grows fonder”. We always look forward to meeting each other, and will make our off days or special occasions extra special. We also made an agreement to spend quality time together at least once a week.

How has your relationship contributed to your professional growth within the organization?

Fadli: Time to time, we will exchange creative ideas and help cover each other’s routines to support our individual professional growth.

Junidah: Yes! We are each other’s biggest fan, the number one cheerleader. Interestingly, being in the same organisation has enabled us to understand our strengths at work and helped us to better recognise our personal needs and manage our relationship.

Were there any project that you got to work together on, and how did that go?

Junidah: During SEAYSLC, but we were in different tribes.

Fadli: Yea we didn’t work together, we challenged each other!

What do you think is the key to maintaining a healthy relationship while working together in the same organization?

Fadli: Respect each other’s decisions and embrace our responsibilities as a family after work.
Junidah: Respect is important. Respect each other’s boundaries and be appreciative of each other. Always try to listen, communicate and compromise.
