Learn How to Dribble

Dribbling is the most basic skill that a player has to learn in order to effectively play basketball. Here are 4 tips for you to keep in mind that will help you become a better dribbler and be more confident with the ball in your hands.

1. Get comfortable

If you’re new to basketball, start out with this warmup before doing anything else. Spend 10 – 20 minutes passing the ball around your body. You can do it around your head, followed by around your waist and around your legs in a figure 8 motion. You want to get a sense of familiarity with the ball's weight, feel and how it moves in the air.

2. Control the ball with your fingertips

When you dribble, control the ball with your fingertips, not your palm.  It may seem unnatural initially, but with more practice, you will get better. Once you have mastered this foundational technique, you will be able to dribble faster and execute complicated moves.

3. Keep your head straight

Never dribble with your head down and eyes constantly on the ball as this will severely limit your view of the court. You will become a much better player once you have acquired the ability to dribble the ball with your head up as this will allow you to scan the court and read the game.

4. Dribble the ball hard

If you dribble the ball too gently, it takes a longer time to reach your hands which makes it easier for the opposing team players to swipe the ball out of your hands. The harder you dribble, the faster the ball reaches your hand. As you practice, make greater use of your elbow as this will allow you to generate more power.
