Who We Are

Sport Singapore’s mandate to enable Singaporeans to live better through sport undergirds our every effort to serve the people across their various life stages. The Children and Youth Sport Framework was created in 2019 with the goal of providing more opportunities for children and youth to play and pursue sport in and out of school. We envisioned a national-level breakthrough in growing our capabilities and capacities to support the child’s holistic development and life journey.

This effort begins with our preschoolers. By fostering physical literacy at a young age, children can develop the skills and confidence they need to be active and engaged in physical activity throughout their lives. Together with like-minded stakeholders, preschools, early childhood educators and parents, we hope to raise active and happy preschoolers. Our ActiveSG community programmes serving preschoolers complement this effort to get children to move and play outside of school and home.

It is our hope that this one-stop platform would serve as a useful repository for early childhood educators to: access resources such as our Fun Start Move Smart guides, strengthen their capabilities through our professional development initiatives, enhance their motor skills development curriculum through the Nurture Kids programme and explore more parent engagement ideas with support from Active Parents movement.

Participating in the ECDA – SportSG IGP has provided my fellow educators and I with new insights on how to incorporate fun and engaging features in our preschool curriculum. Making use of the indoor space helps to infuse playful learning opportunities to help our children stay active and have fun in each activity. The engagement sessions also provided us with many ideas on how to help children become more focused and engaged after a quick energising brain break.

My team and I are glad to be part of ECDA-SportSG IGP as it has enriched our centre’s learning experiences, guiding us to plan different types of movement activities both indoor and outdoor.

Through the programme, we have built our repertoire in designing meaningful movement activities which support the children’s overall development. For instance, the use of Active Navigation Route along the pathways has promoted the children to be self-directed learners as they enjoy moving and learning at the same time.

We have observed the positive impact of integrating movement in our planned activities, as the children are able to stay engaged in class and regulate their behaviour and emotions.

The Nurture Kids programme has supported both children in their motor skills development (MSD), and teachers in advancing their MSD knowledge and skills. With continuous improvements made to the programme, the centre is provided with more flexibility to adapt the curriculum for its own use. Friendly coaches also provided advice (even during Covid period via virtual mode) to the centre and teachers. Lastly, parents also vouch for the programme through the improvement in the children’s MSD skills from participating in the programme. They also benefited from participating in the engagement programmes with their children.

The Nurture Kids programme allows children to learn through play. Not only do the children enjoy themselves through the fun and interactive activities, they also develop and work on their gross motor skills. When teachers conduct the lessons, guidelines are provided to assist teachers in providing clear verbal cues that are simple and short for children to understand. The programme also assists teachers in providing regression and progression in the activities to meet children’s needs and abilities, especially for teachers who are not trained in motor skills development for children.  This programme not only benefitted the children but also the teachers, thank you.

The Nurture Kids Programme has garnered many positive feedback from educators and children throughout the years. The on-site sessions conducted by the coaches created opportunities for children to be introduced to Motor Skills Development skills in a fun and engaging way.

From the programme, educators learnt to be more conscientious in promoting healthy lifestyles to children. They also feel empowered and became more resourceful in planning and conducting physical lessons with the children, which cover various motor skills, regardless indoors/outdoors.

Additionally, children were also encouraged to lead an active lifestyle through healthy eating and exercising.  They developed better social emotional skills and learnt the importance of healthy living.

The Nurture Kids programme has played a pivotal role in promoting social-emotional skills and fostering confidence in our children to perform motor skills in both indoor and outdoor settings. The programme effectively instills in children the significance of leading a healthy lifestyle, encompassing regular exercise and balanced nutrition. By cultivating teamwork, children learn to collaborate with their peers to achieve shared goals. Our educators have become more conscientious in promoting healthy habits, empowered to conduct engaging sessions with children, and equipped with enhanced skills to teach motor skills development lessons. They embrace opportunities to collaborate with external partners in planning meaningful activities. Overall, the Nurture Kids programme has had a transformative impact on both our educators and children, creating a thriving environment for growth, learning, and healthy development.

Kiddolympics was an engaging and inclusive event during the GetActive! Singapore 2021 celebration, where we actively involved parents in creating DIY props using recycled materials. This not only fostered creativity but also strengthened the bond between parents and children as they shared meaningful time together. We also took the opportunity to promote sustainability by using recycled materials, instilling in children and parents the value of environmental consciousness. During the Kampung Games event in the 2022 edition, our educators embarked on a nostalgic journey, rediscovering traditional games and their significance. By embracing these games, our educators not only preserved cultural heritage but also imparted valuable lessons to children about the importance of traditions and the joy of simple, time-honoured activities.

Through our participation in GetActive! Singapore 2021 Kiddolympics campaign and the virtual finale, our teachers, children and parents learnt about the importance and benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.

The teachers gained valuable insights on how to set up activities that enhance children’s sporting techniques, including running, sliding, crawling, leaping, jumping and skipping skills. This also elevated the quality of teaching physical and emotional well-being. The step-by-step guides and materials provided for the DIY equipment making were also extremely helpful. Furthermore, the tips for engaging children offered meaningful support to both teachers and parents.

It has been an exceptional experience that inspired us all to embrace a healthy and active lifestyle. Thank you for the wonderful activities!

The collaboration with SportSG for Kiddolympics and Kampung Games festivals during the GetActive! Singapore celebrations has brought immense excitement to our children, teachers, and parents, particularly through the experience of creating our own DIY sports equipment. The games were a delightful fusion of tradition and innovation, as the children embraced their creativity to reinvent the traditional games in their unique ways. What more, our children enjoyed the Dance of the Nation workout so much that it is now part of our daily morning workout song!

I am thrilled to provide my heartfelt testimonial for SportSG - GetActive! Singapore 2022 campaign which my school participated in. The Kampung Games experience made a difference in the way teachers and children engage in physical activities. It was also incredibly easy for teachers to incorporate sports into the lessons and to promote active learning. With a wide range of interactive resources and training materials, the campaign has allowed teachers to create engaging and inclusive sports experiences for children. Thank you SportSG for giving us a memorable experience through our collaboration!

SportSG offers preschoolers, educators and families the opportunities to get active with a diverse and exciting line-up of sporting activities suited for all M.Y World @Yishun collaborated with SportSG and participated in GetActive! Singapore Nurture Kids campaign in 2022. The challenge was to re-invent Kampung games that encourage preschoolers to develop their skills in fundamental movement.

Together with the teachers, K2 children brainstormed and came up with ‘Reminisce Our Kampong Game’. This opportunity helped children to learn and explore kampong games that included National Icons of Singapore. We came up first within the Top 10 winners of the challenge!

It was a great experience for us as the children were excited and they enjoyed the invented outdoor Kampung games.

Nurture Kids programme has children looking forward to lessons conducted weekly. They are excited to experience and master new motor skills. We have seen significant improvement in some children such as their balancing skills and movement abilities. Children are now able to move with confidence and are more engaged during motor skills activities.

Our instructor, Kavin, was able to make lessons engaging for children by incorporating stories and allowing them to use their imagination during activity times. Specific simple instruction was given by him throughout each class. Kavin showed patience when dealing with children who need additional help by going through the demonstration with them slowly.

Overall, the Nurture Kids programme has developed our children's gross motor skills and improved their self-esteem in class!

One of the most notable benefits of the Nurture Kids programme is its focus on holistic development. Through the wide range of fundamental movement skills and sport activities, children have not only improved their physical abilities but also developed essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience, discipline, and leadership. The programme's well-structured curriculum ensures a balanced approach to sport, incorporating both skill-building exercises and friendly competitions that promote healthy competition and sportsmanship.

The dedicated and highly qualified Nurture Kids coaches deserve special mention. Their passion for teaching and nurturing young children is evident in every session. They create a supportive and encouraging atmosphere where children feel comfortable taking risks, trying new things, and pushing their limits. The coaches provide constructive feedback, personalised guidance, and individual attention, ensuring that each child receives proper guidance according to their unique abilities and needs.

ECDA-SportSG IGP is a wonderful programme that equips the teachers with innovative and creative ways to conduct movement activities in the classroom and outdoors. The teachers were able to engage the children creatively. It is wonderful to see children moving actively and meaningfully. The children are not seated for prolonged time and it was visible from their engagement that the experiences planned from the programme are fun!
